01

Decide what each view is for

Make a short list of the areas you want to see, such as an entrance, driveway or office doorway. Think about the detail you need and the lighting at different times of day. More cameras do not automatically mean better coverage.

02

Check position, power and cabling

Camera placement affects what you can see. Trees, walls, glare and distance can all get in the way. Plan where equipment will sit, how it will be powered and how cables will run. Keep views focused on the areas you need to monitor and consider the privacy of people nearby.

03

Understand recording and access

Ask where footage will be stored, how long the planned setup is expected to keep it, and how you will find an event later. Phone viewing depends on the system and connection. Use strong, unique passwords and limit access to people who need it.

04

Try everyday tasks before handover

Practise opening the live view and finding a recording. Discuss what happens if the internet or power goes down, because recording and remote viewing may behave differently. Backup power needs to cover the components the system relies on.

The useful bit to remember

A useful camera setup gives you a view you need, recordings you can find and controls you feel comfortable using.
