RAM gives active work room to breathe
RAM, also called memory, holds information that running applications need to reach quickly. Having enough can help when several programmes or browser tabs are open together. It is temporary working space: its contents do not remain when power is turned off. Adding RAM does not give you a larger permanent home for your photo collection.
Storage keeps your files and applications
Your storage drive holds saved documents, photos, software and the operating system. An SSD is a solid-state drive; an HDD is a traditional hard disk drive. SSDs generally access information faster than HDDs. Capacity tells you how much a drive can hold, while drive type and other components affect how quickly work gets done.
Describe the problem before choosing a part
A warning about a full disk points towards storage space. Slowing down when many applications are open can suggest memory pressure, but it is not a diagnosis on its own. Record when the problem happens and what is open. A technician can check resource use and drive health alongside software issues before recommending an upgrade.
Check what your particular computer supports
Compatibility depends on the exact model. Some computers have replaceable memory or drives; others have components fixed to the main board. Ask what can be changed, what the practical benefit should be and what the complete job would cost. Include the computer’s overall condition and supported software in the decision, rather than choosing the largest number on a box.
Plan the move before changing a drive
If storage is being replaced, agree how your files and applications will be transferred or reinstalled. Check that important files have a separate, usable backup first. Keep a note of the software and accounts you rely on. A new drive may improve a suitable computer, but it does not replace a backup routine.
The useful bit to remember
RAM helps with the work open right now. Storage holds what you save. Choose an upgrade after checking the actual bottleneck and the computer’s compatibility.
